Groove is plenty of things. Most interestingly, it is a complete implementation of The Open System Interconnection (OSI) Architecture, at least from the Session later and up (credit: http://cne.gmu.edu/modules/network/osi.html):

A more pragmatic view of Groove is as follows:

  • 4. Business applications
  • 3. Graphical shell or desktop
  • 2. Replicated, synchronizing Peer Database Network
  • 1. Operating Environment running on top of Windows (virtually identical to the way Windows 1.0 was an "operating environment" that ran on top of MS-DOS)

The most unqiuely valuable part is #2: Groove's implementation of a Peer Database Network.
